Samsung’s Omnia SGH-i900

The recent announcement of the new Apple iPhone 3G, has really changed our expectations as to what our mobile phones can do, back when it all began calls were enough for most of us, then came sms, mms, emails and video calls and whilst the original iPhone was advanced for most people, the new 3G model that arrives in July will totally blow you away.
Apple’s dominance in the market is a good thing though, as the usual heavy hitters such as Nokia, Blackberry, Sharp (Sidekick) and now Samsung are stepping up their game and coming up with some truly innovative and stunning creations.
This is the gorgeous Omnia SGH-i900, Samsung’s first attempt at stealing some of Apple’s thunder, and from first impressions they have done a great job, the screen is large, but slightly smaller than the iPhone at 3.2” (240×400 resolution), the camera is superior being 5 mega pixels and containing auto focus and flash, along with that all important 3G video calling camera that the iPhone badly lacks.
The Omnia has FM radio, TV output, GPS and stereo Bluetooth, and can run on 3G or wifi connectivity, like the iPhone it comes in a variety of different sizes – 8GB or 16GB but also allows memory extension via microSD card. One of its most interesting features is the “haptic” technology it uses for the touchscreen, which means that the strength of how you press the touch screen, or how the touchscreen will respond to your presses (force feedback) will be a control factor of the phone.
Personally I think the Samsung will sink under the advertising force of the iPhone, but it’s a real shame, it’s a stronger phone on many points, and it’s far from ugly, I would get one just to be different from the crowd, but that’s me!.
