Here’s something out of James Bond or your favorite Spy catalogue. It’s a pen. No, it’s a phone. Yes, it’s a penphone that writes with ink and connects you to other people via satellite. This slim pocket phone may not have all the bells and whistles of the latest BlackBerry or Sony Ericsson, but what it lacks in fancy extras it makes up for in novelty.

penphone

This concept phone by an unnamed designer (guess this is very hush hush) will utilize Bluetooth headset capability, USB connection, a microSD slot and a mono LCD screen that displays the telephone number, day, date and signal strength. Although the phone will most likely be used with a headset, users will have the option to “talk to the pen” with the included microphone and earpiece at either end of the writing implement. I wonder if you can hang up the call by clicking the end nob/control wheel with your thumb. When you’re really annoyed at your EX, you can make a big scene of hanging up on him/her with the flick of a digit. Hmm, maybe not as satisfying as slamming the phone back on the cradle, but it’s as violent as you can get with a penphone.

The concept design also includes a touch interface keypad along the length of the 8.7-inch ink-capable cellphone. Do you see yourself holding a pen up to your ear and talking into it with complete sincerity? If you think about it, it’s no weirder than seeing people talk to the air and muttering “Is this person talking to me? Maybe if I just ignore the crazy freak, they’ll go away.” Then you see the Bluetooth plug in their ear and realize they are actually having a conversation with someone else. Maybe.
