$100 OLPC Now Selling as $200 Laptop
Remember the $100 One Laptop per Child Foundation? These little lime green notebooks intended for children less fortunate than their first world brothers and sisters are now being sold for $200 a pop.
Since the beginning of the OLPC program, the price of “the $100 laptop” has been a rising issue. The initial figure rose to $150 in February, to $176 in April and $188 just six weeks ago. Now, the figure is up to $200. What does this mean for the kiddies? Fewer computers and less access to technology.
Uruguay’s government has ordered 100,000 machines, scheduled for production next month in China. The order for the OLPC machines has much lower numbers than originally anticipated. Nicholas Negroponte, the MIT Professor responsible for the origination of OLPC, is touting the $200 machines on his laptopfoundation.org website.
