Palm Foleo: Companion to Treo, Fits in Very Large Pocket

Jeff Hawkins, creator of the original Palm Pilot and Treo, unveiled a laptop-like companion to be used with Smartphones in yesterday’s big announcement. The Foleo’s main function is an email manager, allowing the user to synchronize files back and forth between the Foleo and the Treo (or other Smartphone) to keep all data up-to-date. Palm’s target audience for this 2.5 lb, $499, 10” LCD screened machine is for users who are, according to the press release, “productivity-minded business people who want a more complete mobile solution for email, attachments and access to the Web.”

The Foleo boasts instant on/off, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth link to a phone’s Internet access, Linux system with Opera web browser, USB port, SD card slot, headphone jack, fullsize keyboard and 5 hours of battery life. The half laptop, half-we’re-not-sure-what-the point-is, personal mobile device provides the user with editing and viewing capability in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files.
