Gamers have been seeking the best ways to view their games forever, from ill faited projects like the virtual boy, (which failed badly and really hurt your eyes) to the projectors of today allowing you to play games like GTA on your wall at home, but none of these offer true immersion into your gaming experience until now.

John Nilsson a Swedish inventor and lifelong gaming fan who created his first video game aged 12, believed that with the advent of virtual reality that it would only be a matter of time until full immersion was available to everyone, but as development on all things VR ground to a halt, he felt it was time to throw his hat into the ring and make his own device – the jDome.

The jDome is somewhat developed on the design of the Imax cinemas, which feature a curved screen to envelop the viewer in the movie, likewise the jDome too brings the gamer directly into the game, showing them areas of the game which normally would be hidden from view, so for example whilst playing a FPS (First Person Shooter) such as Crysis or Halo you can see another player/enemy creeping up in your peripheral vision, or while playing a driving game you can see your opponent trying to overtake you.

Currently the jDome is only a project, but it is trying to become a mainstream product, and was recently shown at the SGA (The Swedish Game Awards) to much interest. If you want to get your hands on one at the minute they are a bit pricey at approx $6000, but that is for a prototype model, the designers are hoping to get the price down to about $125 – $200 when it becomes mass produced. The project sounds very interesting and you can see a clip of the jDome prototype in action by clicking HERE Snow Buddies dvd

if the product does well, maybe they will adapt it for other mediums such as movies.
