Sony S Series Walkman

Sony have really dropped the ball of late, in the early eighties they started the portable music revolution launching the walkman series of cassette tape players, which was followed by the Discman range of CD players and then the ill fated Mini discs, but then something went wrong at Sony HQ, who knows what it was but one thing is for certain they lost their place at the top of the portable music kingdom to be replaced by iPod and Creative Zen, but Sony is putting up a fight, and they seriously want their throne back.

The new S Series Walkman is not only Sony’s slimmest walkman ever measuring a meagre 7.5mm thick, but with its high class looks they are trying to steal customers away from the iPod, especially when you factor in that it can sync with iTunes and play programs from the BBC’s iPlayer service (which has previously been prevented on everything but streaming on the iPod touch).

The S Series plays MP3, WMA, AAC audio and WMV and MP4 video files, and also features for the first time the SenseMe engine which analyses your songs for various properties, allowing you to select a certain mood to play back, so if your boyfriend just dumped you it can choose soppy love songs, or if you’re getting ready for a big night out with the girls it can dig out some upbeat classics from your library to fit in perfectly with your mood.

The device comes with 13.5 mm EX headphones, and uses noise cancellation technology built in. On a single charge the S Series will play around 40 hrs of music and 10 hours of video. Prices start at around £80 for the 4GB version and around £110 for the 8GB, getting rid of that bulky iPod just got a lot easier and cheaper!
