Neo 1973: The Ultimate iPhone Rival has Left the Building
Love your iPhone but hate that you can’t take it apart and make its software and hardware fully customizable? OpenMoko, a project dedicated to creating an open source software platform for smartphones, has created the Neo1973 that runs on the Linux OS.
Aimed at pleasing consumers and hackers alike, the Neo1973 not only has the capability to add additional applications, but you can also get your hands dirty in the hardware department, using the included Torx screwdriver that comes with the shipping package and fix it up to meet your requirements.
The Neo1973 will not be available to the public for a few months, but will compete with Apple’s iPhone market in price and usability in the $300 range. Developers can immediately purchase a $450 ‘pre-alpha’ version of the phone from the OpenMoko website.
The developer’s version comes in a choice of silver and black or orange. It includes a touchscreen, a quad-band GSM transceiver, a micro-SD card slot, Bluetooth, onboard GPS, with future versions offering Wi-Fi.
