In response to the threat of Blu-ray selling so well in the US, Toshiba has announced that it will be offering a promotional sale at the Home Media Expo’s EMA show where the company will offer its HD A2 HD DVD player and three HD DVD movies for only $99.

Sounds pretty good, right? Don’t get too excited. In order to get into the show, you will need to dig your wallet deeper : between $100 and $500, and offer valid only for attendees– no one else.

In response to an endless supply of questions, Toshiba released the following statement: “The $99 player is an accommodation price only for attendees of the Home Media Expo’s EMA trade show this week and is being offered by the HD DVD Promotional Group. It is not in any way connected with a broader consumer offer from Toshiba.”

Oh well. Looks like you’ll have to wait another year for those kind of prices.
