IBM and MediaTek 60GHz Chips: 100x Faster than WiFi

WiFi’s file transfer rates have made dial-up a thing of the past. Who has time to wait for anything in our global culture of speed first, patience later? Radio scientists at IBM Research and MediaTek have joined forces to speed up file downloading time with a new wireless transmission protocol that functions in the 60 GHz spectrum.

Mehmet Soyuer, lead researcher for IBM’s TJ Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York, purports that the new chip technology will transfer files at approximately 2.5 gigs per second, 100x faster than the 11 to 54 megabits per second of current WiFi file transfer times.

Within the next three years, we can expect to see IBM and MediaTek’s chips out on the market, allowing for super fast transfer times. With this new technology, a 10-gig file will be able to be transferred in five seconds.
